Another Student Success Story!13 December 2013
Meet Cassandra McElroy, Medical Assistant
What were you doing prior to enrolling at PPC?
I was doing caregiving work and staying at home with my son.
Why did you choose PPC?
I talked to a friend that had recently started going to PPC and saw that they had the Medical Assistant program. I decided then that I wanted to meet with someone at the school and start the process of enrolling.
Why did you choose that particular program?
I have always been interested in doing something in the medical field. I had started a Medical Assistant program a few yrs back but unfortunately that program did not work for me.
What were some of your challenges while a student at PPC?
I found out about ¾ of the way through my first term that I was pregnant. It was difficult because I had a 2 yr old at home and my husband was going to school and working full time.
What were some of your successes?
I was able to complete the program while being pregnant. I went into my extern super late into the pregnancy and only took a week off. I also passed my NCMA with a newborn and toddler at home. I was really proud of myself.
What was the job search process like for you after graduating?
I began looking for a job with about 2 weeks left in my externship. I applied at small clinics, PeaceHealth, and Samaritan Health Services. I had the best luck with Samaritan Health Services. I had about 7 interviews with different clinics in their system. I was finally called back for a second interview. I accepted a position as a Medical Assistant as their Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Clinic in Corvallis.
What are your short term career goals?
I would like to get a couple years’ experience with the education I have and return to PPC to complete my LPN.
What are your long term career goals?
I would like to eventually become a RN. It may take some time but I will get there.
What advice would you like to give other students at PPC?
Don’t give up. As hard as it gets, it is all worth it in the end. The instructors are phenomenal and excellent at training you for the work field.
