I teach: Intro to Sociology (SOC110)
I have: B.A. in Sociology from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN. In addition; an M.A. in Sociology from The Queen’s University of Belfast.
Teaching sociology has truly enriched my life for one major reason: the students. Each class, my students help me to explore sociology in new and exciting ways because each of them has a unique life experience and perspective that contributes to the rich diversity of our social world. The best part of teaching ‘Intro to Sociology’ is definitely helping students develop their sociological imagination and ability to see class concepts and theoretical perspectives at play in their own lives. Nothing is more rewarding than to have a student tell me that they connected our in-class discussions with an out-of-class experience. This is not only rewarding, but is exactly what inspires me to create classroom lectures, discussions, and activities that help students visualize those connections even better. In the words of the great Sociologist C.Wright Mills, “Neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both.”
