Criminal justice degrees offer a variety of career opportunities within the criminal justice field. Many people think a criminal justice degree leads to a career as a police officer. While being a police officer is one option, there are other career routes to consider as well. Here are four potential career paths for those considering a criminal justice degree from Pioneer Pacific College:

Probation Officer
Probation officers monitor people released from the corrections system called parolees. Probation officers ensure that parolees are abiding by the rules of their probation. They also assist parolees as they adjust to normal life after release. During their time in school, probation officers learn techniques and treatments to help them better assist parolees. Probation officers often work with specific parolees long-term. It is a great opportunity to make a positive impact on a parolee’s life. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics states probation officers make a median wage of $47,200 per year.

Correctional Officer
Correctional officers work primarily in correctional facilities where they supervise people who have been convicted of crimes. There is less pre-career training for correctional officers as they receive a lot of on the job training and participate in qualification tests on a regular basis at their correctional facility. Correctional officers are no longer considered “prison guards,” since their responsibilities are concerned with the rehabilitation of prisoners through implementing and enhancing treatment programs. Correctional officers make an average salary of $39,020 per year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Fish and Game Warden
Fish and Game wardens work in national parks, forest preserves, public waterways, and other protected conservation areas. Fish and game wardens work to protect and monitor the wildlife and habitat of these natural areas. They investigate criminal behavior related to wildlife, write up reports, and can also be called to testify in court. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, fish and game wardens make an average yearly salary of $55,670. This is the perfect job for those who enjoy experiencing nature.

State Trooper
State troopers work on state highways to make sure that people abide by the federal and state vehicle and road laws. They are also available to assist local and federal law enforcement in apprehending criminals, looking for signs of illegal activity, and assessing suspicious behavior. State troopers earn a median wage of $55,010 per year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Depending on the area, crime levels, and their experience, state troopers can potentially earn more.

These are only four of the possible career options with a degree in criminal justice.
