Sara Kiser Layton, Healthcare Administration

What were you doing prior to enrolling at Pioneer pacific College?

Prior to enrolling at Pioneer Pacific College I was working full-time as a Phlebotomist for Providence Health Systems.

Why did you choose Pioneer Pacific College?

I chose Pioneer Pacific College because I had previously attended classes there and graduated in 2006 with my Associate’s Degree in Medical Assisting w/ X-ray. I had really enjoyed my experience and decided that it was the perfect school for me to attend. The classes were flexible and allowed me to continue to work full-time while going to school full-time.

Why did you choose your Program?

I decided to do the Healthcare Administration program because having a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration would open doors and opportunities to further my career and would give me the proper education to obtain an outstanding career in the medical field.

What were some of your challenges/experience while a student at Pioneer Pacific College?

The biggest challenge for me was finding a balance between working full-time, attending classes full-time, and making personal time for myself.

The instructors at Pioneer Pacific College were all very knowledgeable and personable. They shared many of their own individual career and life experiences that exemplified what they were teaching.  I am truly grateful for the experience and the knowledge I gained from attending school at PPC.

What was your job search process like?

I am fortunate that I did not have to search for a new job and that the company that I was already working for had approached me with an opportunity to advance within my career. Providence offered me a position with their management team for the Outpatient Labs. I am currently fulfilling that role as the Regional Coordinator of Patient Service Center Operations.

What are some of the skills you are using in your current position that you gained while attending Pioneer Pacific College?

The list of skills that I learned from attending Pioneer Pacific College is endless.

What are your long term goals?

My long-term goal is to build a solid foundation in management within Providence Health Systems.

What advice would you like to give other students at Pioneer Pacific College?

My advice to other students at Pioneer Pacific College is to stay strong and committed. It is important to be very organized and strive for your very best. If times get tough and you feel overwhelmed, ask for help. I would also advise students to never give up and always believe that they can accomplish anything that they set their mind to.
