Pioneer Pacific College offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Healthcare Administration for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare industry. Our healthcare administration program provides the training and skills needed to manage projects and medical staff, create operating policies, and handle a range of facility operations.

Below is a summary of what you can expect when you enter the healthcare administration field.

What is Healthcare Administration

Healthcare administration involves leadership, management, and administration of public and government healthcare systems, medical facilities, hospitals, and hospital networks. Healthcare management can be divided into two categories:

Hospital Administration

Hospital administrators play a central in healthcare management. They may be current or previous physicians or medical experts. They may manage an entire facility or a specific department such as medical practice, policy analysis, finance, accounting, budgeting, human resources, or marketing. Regardless of what they oversee, their primary focus is healthcare.

Healthcare Administration

Healthcare administration may encompass a larger role than the inner workings of the facility. While their primary roles include workflow management, personnel, job performance standards, and equipment and supply resources, they may also handle issues and policies within the local, regional, or national healthcare system.

Their role is to ensure that the infrastructure is in place while fostering a healthy working relationship between the hospital and the healthcare system at large.

Experience and Education Requirements

Administrators at the executive level have obtained a Master’s degree in a related field such as public health or business, hospital or nursing administration. A bachelor’s degree is often sufficient for entry-level positions, or for employment with smaller facilities when combined with relevant healthcare experience.

Certification

Anyone pursuing a healthcare administration career must pass the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) exam and obtain state licensure. Healthcare administrators in other fields are not required to be licensed. Voluntary certification is available, however, through the American College of Healthcare Administrators (ACHA).

Skill Requirements

Healthcare administration requires strong analytical and communication skills in addition to leadership ability and business insight. An administrator must make crucial decisions and delegate authority while managing all levels of medical and administrative personnel.

He or she must be able to establish objectives, analyze data, perform evaluations, and establish policy to maintain high standards of patient care. A healthcare administrator must also be a skilled negotiator and have the ability to build healthy professional relationships with government agencies, unions, and community organizations.

Salary

The average pay for an Entry-Level Healthcare Administrator is $55,202 per year. Candidates for this position must demonstrate past success with managing programs, budgets, personnel, and operations.
