Which Healthcare Career Will Let You Work From Home?

13 August 2018 By Lucas

To reduce overhead and operational expenses, many companies are now hiring medical transcriptionists (MT) remotely. This opportunity allows you to work from home and gives you a bit of flexibility in your schedule and workload.

What is a medical transcriptionist, how do you train to be an MT, and, most importantly, can you make a career out of taking on a remote position?

Let’s take a closer look below.

The Demand for At-Home Medical Transcriptionist is Growing

Reports from Indeed, CareerBuilder, FlexJobs, and other online job recruiting platforms have indicated that at-home medical transcription jobs have experienced a significant spike over the last decade.

The reason for the jump has to do with several factors:

  • Cloud-based transcription solutions have emerged in a big way.
  • Customers now have more direct access to MTs.
  • Medical regulations are causing companies to outsource medical transcription jobs.
  • AI and speech recognition software still doesn’t edit documents accurately.
  • Healthcare growth creates a higher demand for MT positions.

What is the Role of a Medical Transcriptionist?

Medical transcriptionists listen to recorded dictation submitted by a doctor or other healthcare professional. The MT transcribes the information directly or interprets the data into diagnostic test results, operative reports, referral letters, or other documents.

Medical transcriptionists also review and edit medical documents using speech recognition technology. Transcriptionists process medical terminology and abbreviations while preparing patients’ medical histories, discharge summaries, and other documents.

What is Average Salary for a Medical Transcriptionist?

The amount of money MTs can make out of college differs depending on their skill level and the company that hires them. The median annual wage for medical transcriptionists was $35,250 as of May 2017

On average $25,000 – $30,000 is entry level pay. Seasoned professionals who demonstrate competency and efficiency can increase their pay throughout their career. Companies pay well for employees who are dependable and trainable.

Can You Make a Career out of Being a Medical Transcriptionist?

Yes. As the demand for MTs continues to climb, companies will pay more to fill the much-needed positions. Medical transcriptionist will develop skills that can propel them into other careers.

You will ultimately determine your success. If you are a hard worker, diligent, and patient, you can make a good living as a transcriptionist. As you build your career and your reputation as a distinguished professional, opportunities will arise for higher paying jobs.

Earning a certificate from an accredited college gives you the training and the education you need to get a good job early in your career.

What are the Educational Requirements to be an MT?

Most companies require you to have a certificate or an associate’s degree in medical transcription. Although some companies will train you at the entry level, you are likely to get a better paying job with a certificate.

Most companies would rather hire a transcriptionist who has received the proper training and has demonstrated competency before entering the job market.
